Great Spiritual Leaders of the old days tries to get this message across the people. The Great Buddha points to this way. However thier mind could not comprehand. In Taoism it says What it is , It is actually not. What wisdom. Read the Bhagavagita and it says about Godhead and the light. No man knows the Faher accept the son says Lord Jesus . Enlightment, is to know our Heavenly Father. The World do not know and cannot know Godhead. It's when you leave the world , then only can you know God. So, One must cease to be in this world in order to know God. Do that mean we have to die physically to know God? Of course not. God gave us a way through Jesus Christ. We have to die with Christ, and we will also live with Christ. So when you have already die, your life here on earth is over, so is sin, and when you arise with Christ you arise in a new man , being now a child of God, as Christ is the Son of God. So if you are a child of God then you are of God. Since you are of God, What then have you any part of the world. Therefore, now the World do not know you. So whether you are a priest or not, you have to leave the world as according to God Almighty way. Find the Way and you find God. Jesus Christ is the Way and this is the truth. Meditate on it.

A priest is someone who offers sacrifices to gods or to 'God', because he and his worshippers want to be made acceptable to the gods or to 'God' by doing that.
Jesus Christ died on the cross to make all other sacrifices unnecessary. In fact, if we think a sacrifice is necessary, we think that Jesus' sacrifice was not good enough. It's like saying that he was not divine at all. So priests, and those who worship with priests, are not made right with God because they do not think they are right with God. They think they have to keep offering sacrifices, when they can relax and rejoice, accepting that Jesus did everything for them on the cross.
Now why do Christians renounce self, and take up their crosses? They do that in gratitude for Jesus' death that makes them right with God. They put Jesus' will first, which is perfect, not their own, which is selfish, not perfect at all.
'Taking up the cross' does not mean that they die on a cross, but that they put up with the unpopularity that comes with being a Christian. (People used to say nasty things to those on their way to be crucified.)
So a priest and his worshippers do not deny themselves as God wants them to, and they do not take up their crosses. A person must be 'born again' to be able to do that.

This quote is from the Gospels as Jesus was interacting with a young man who desired to know how he might inherit eternal life. Ultimately Jesus tells him that he needs to practice a lifestyle of selflessness. It is not a physical reference to cross-bearing or a life of travail. As to how a priest does this... your answer to that question rests in someone is is a priest. Hope this helps a bit.
