I think some of the best shows were in the first season. The Christmas one, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire", was funny, but actually, that was not part of the actual series. It was a special that aired in December, a month before the actual series started. "Bart the Genius" was the first in the actual series and it was hilarious. "Bart the General" is just classic Simpsons. And one of my favorite all time Simpsons episode, "Call of the Simpsons" where they mistake Homer for Bigfoot. A good start for a good show. But you may be referring the the Tacey Ullman shorts which were great, too.

The Simpson's made their debut on The Tracey Ullman Show. They were totally different then. When they got their own series, I am sure they weren't expected to last too long, plus, I am sure Matt Groenig had to work out some of the bugs of doing a complete show, but as soon as he did, the quality of the show got better.

Naw, not crap. But they were not as quality as the newer ones, in terms of the animation.

The characters were drawn a little bit less detailed in the first few episodes- the sketches were slightly rougher. As time advanced, the characters were more cleanly defined.

No way. The animation style was more crude but the writing was just as good if not better than some of the later shows, though I have to say that the writing has been excellent throughout.

If you're referring to when they were on the Tracey Ulman show, they were hilarious! That's how they started. I think by the second season they were really able to get the laughter going.. like the Haloween episode of the shining.. or shinning and Homer beating up George sr.. those are the classics.

I think they were all very dark. The later ones have better humour andare more moral. I find the early ones very depressing. The voices dragged also.
