For the responders who asked, the Hail Mary is (mostly) found in Luke 1.
Luke 1:28: "Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee."
Luke 1: 42: "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb..."
Here we add Jesus' name: "...fruit of your womb, Jesus."
Then we close with, "Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death."
For those who THINK Mary wasn't holy, the title "full of grace" in Luke 1:26 indicates that Mary had received the fullness of grace from God (i.e., total absolution from sin through the Lord's grace and mercy), so she had been made holy by Him. "Mother of God" clarifies that we Catholics understand that Jesus is God (and Mary is His mother). "Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death" is an activity approved by Scripture -- asking the elders of the church to pray for you (James 5:16). Mary, as the first person who ever believed in Jesus and the first person to lay down her life for her belief in Jesus and the first person to receive the Holy Spirit in a life-changing way, is the first Christian and the first elder of the Church. We Catholics do NOT think Mary is our Savior in any way -- that's Jesus and only Jesus -- but we do believe she is alive with Christ by the power of Christ and as a living person in heaven is perfectly capable of praying for us.

They're uneducated. People will always give those of a different sect crap about something or they wouldn't be different sects. There are those people in Indiana who handle snakes and they think it's supported by the Bible. I personally do not think Christianity would exist today but for the Hail Mary simply because the Pagans would never have given up the Goddess completely and the Christianity marketing people were able to pretend they still had one in Mary.
Edit: from Wikipedia
The first part of the prayer is the salutation of the Archangel Gabriel as reported in the Gospel of Luke 1:28 "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee". The second is from the greeting given to Mary by her cousin Elizabeth in Luke 1:42 "Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb", and a reinforcement of basic Christian belief in the real divinity and real humanity of Jesus.

What's the reference of the prayer in Luke? (sincerely curious)
The popular notion that we see on TV and in the movies (and in the news for that matter) is of people fervently praying to the Virgin and to the Saints. Perhaps technically the Catholics aren't praying to these individuals, but it sure seems like it looking in from the outside...

In Luke 1:28-35 the angel Gabriel speaks to Mary what you are calling "Mary prayer." Mary was highly favored by God to give birth to Jesus Christ, but Mary is not God and praying to Mary or a statue of Mary is wrong. Why would you ask Mary to pray for you when we can go boldly to Christ Himself? On the cross Christ told John concerning Mary "behold your mother." Christ wanted John to take care of Mary. How many times does God need to tell us that He is a jealous God and that we are to put nothing before Him?Praying to Saints and praying to Mary is wrong because even the angels say bow to God and to God only-worship God and God only. Worship and prayer are so closely knit that I fear God and would never pray or reverence anyone but God. Even bowing to the Pope is wrong. God is God and there is no other.

it somewhat is an particularly deep question... Mary is the earthly mom of Jesus who's meant to be the earthly representative of the trinity, the holy ghost is the religious representative and the daddy is the ruling host of the trinity decrease than which all abides. The trinity itself is god, even regardless of the undeniable fact that we as people can not understand the right nature of this variety of complicated tale and consequently ought to interrupt it up into bits... Your compassion is Jesus, your skill to evaluate what's nice and incorrect is the holy ghost and your potential to p.c. between compassion and justice is god. do no longer hear to preachers, hear to your self. And your mum...

The Bible says to Pray to Jesus in the name of the Father.
" For there is one God and one mediator between God and
men, the man Christ Jesus."
Mary is a great person in the Bible . She was chosen by God to give birth to our Lord and Savior. Hail means that she is full of Grace and that is why God chose her. If she would have said no then God would have found some one else to bring our Savior into this world to save sinners like you and I.

I realize that you give up but I didn't see the first question.
I have issues with asking Mary to pray with us because Mary died and was not resurrected. I don't believe we are to speak to the dead and ask them for help. This of course would cover most of the saints and guardian angels.
I have a direct relationship with Christ and He is the only one I can ask to intercede for me.
Excellent question.

Mary is not a holy figure in the bible. She is the mother of Jesus, so she should be honoured, but not prayed too. Mary will not save us from our sins, and she did not come back from the dead. In the bible it clearly states that we should pray to 'Our Father...' and in 'Jesus' name'. We should not pray to dead people. Jesus rose from the dead and cleansed our souls, and the Father created us, those are the two and only two you should be praying too.

Your argument is with Jesus and Paul, not us.They are the ones that say not to pray to anyone else but God.Jesus said that. And Paul said Jesus is are only intercessor(mediator)
I just believe the Bible not man made Catholic dogma.
That's why Martin Luther said "Solos Scripturas" Scriptures Only. You can't go wrong with that.
