Well if you are all British you don't need a passport to go to Ireland, however, for your airline or boat you will need id so I would check on the website of the company you are travelling with. They will tell you what ID is allowed.

are your kids named on your passport? If they are you have no problem. Technically you don't need passport for Ireland from UK, but it can be very difficult if the kids have no ID - the airline may not accept this. YOu should contact the Irish embassy in UK

i think even kids need passports the best thing to do is to check the passport website.

children used to be put on parents passport but all that changed, now they need their own passport. if still unsure go to post office and get a form.

Look up Ryanair (Irish airline) which probably has the same requirements as British airlines and they do not require passort for adults or children - driving licence okay for adults and no ID for kids - check with your own airline as suggested by others just to be sure (te be suuure!).
