When he jumps the gate, put him back over and tell him "no". You are going to have to keep doing this every time he jumps the gate. It is going to take time but eventually he will get it. You do not have to buy a tall one, you can get another small one and stack them on top of eachother. That is what we do when we babygate our fosters in the kitchen. You can also check out your neighborhood yard sales to see if anyone is selling one or 2 of them. Usually the yard sales that have alot of baby items, have babygates at least that is how it is in our neighborhood.

Try a 4 foot baby gate... that one kept my akita in check. Every other gate he has jumped or climbed. and make sure the dog has enough toys and things to keep him entertained when you are gone. My 4 foot gate came up to my shoulders... and I found it at a pet supply store, so try one of those out.

Before you buy another gate, why not get a big piece of cardboard or something and tape it to the top of the existing gate.

The dog probably could knock it down easily, but it he might not realize that he can and the sight of it will prevent him from jumping.

Why are you separating him in the first place? If you're only watching TV, why can't he be with you? Dogs are pack animals that need to be with their family, not shoved away in a back room.
You should take your dog to obedience training. It will teach your dog to obey your commands and not ignore them because even if you do get a taller gate, he might be determined enough (and lonely enough) to barrel through it.
