Or do you think people choose their religion as individualists?

I think that it is different for everyone. Some people have only known one religion and feel comfortable with that. For example, my father has been a devout Catholic all his life. Other people on the other hand never had any real religion in their life. My husband's parents were not religious at all so neither is my husband. And other people choose their own path of religion in later life. I came from a very diverse family in the sense that my father and his side of the family are all catholics, where as my mother's side of the family are all Baptist. I have a brother who is an atheist, I am into bhuddism, and I have two brothers who are ministers. Some people are influenced by their families but I also think that other people do make their own choices. It all depends on who the person is.

Here in the Philippines, in general, it's an automatic thing that a person becomes a member of his/her family's religion or belief. But after reaching the right age, we choose which religion to pursue. But in general, Filipinos pursue their family's religion.

In the aspect of family and religion of course it is often related, as the children, of whatever religion, are brain washed from the beginning of their lives. However, when some become adults the say NO...and choose their faith per their own perception, but the majority (like sheep) follow the brain washing.

Well, seeing as 90%+ that have a religion follow the religion of their parents I'd say that family was the main influence.

its not about choosing religion... religion is greatly influence by family since its the one of the first thing being thought to us in our young age.and being a kid what we see from our parents is always the the right thing so it can carried in our pattern of thinking. So in general its the environment which has really influence our subject of preference in religion since we define our behavior and attitude based in the context of our own culture.

Most people choose the same religion as was forced on them since childhood, but there are exceptions. It is why I am skeptical of religion, the choices don't seem free or based on logical criteria. Many parents don't give their children much of a choice, and they had the same thing thrust on them. It isn't a good way to decide the infinite fate of our soul.

Most of the people I know have personally chosen their faith; but I'm sure there are probably some who choose because of their family's beliefs.

I think that both of these things happen. I myself choose my faith as an individual, whereas I know some people who are "Christian" or "Catholic" etc..because they were born into that religion.
They often times do not even practice or sometimes believe that faith, but they just label themselves the same as their family.

I think though that eventually people have to make the choice for themselves.

The most important factor in determining a person's religion - by far - is the religion the person was raised in.
