More specifically the OS is the core to allow other programs to use the hardware, which is in turn driven by the drivers.

Basicall you'd have to write software specific to each individual piece of hardware. So a wordprocessor would need to know exactly HOW to talk to every possible model of HDD, video card, printer etc etc etc etc

Instead the "drivers" talk to the hardware
Windows / Max OS / Linux uses the drivers and provides the "interface"
and the applications run on top

Depends on what you mean by computers and OS. There are analogue computers that have no operating systems that work very well. They are 'hard-wired' usually and perform calculations and control functions. People often forget about them.

They wouldn't work without an operating system...because the OS is what makes them work! It provides the user interface.

Every application would have to include functionality to deal directly with the hardware. Think along the lines of embedded devices like your microwave, remote control, digital camera, etc...

In roughly the same way that you would if you had your brain removed.

Without the OS the pc is nothing more than a pile of scrap.

They would make absolutely fabulous paper weights, door stops, boat anchors, you name it. :)
