Yes, the Bible does say to treat your neighbor as you would treat yourself. However, Christians are not perfect, only forgiven. But we are called by God to strive for perfection and owe that to Him for what He did for us. I would suggest to you that you look up some Bible verses related to this topic such as:
Romans 13:10
Galatians 5:22-23
James 3:17
And these are only a few! Good luck! I also come from a similar background with parents who claim to be Christians but who are some of the meanest people I've ever met. Luckily, it did not turn me away from Christ. It actually helped me to be a better Christian and encouraged me to read my Bible and find out what God's true will for me is and how He would have me behave. You will never be truly happy until you are in the center of His will!

True Christians are supposed to follow the teachings of Christ and believe unto Him. So it basically comes down to saying "What would Jesus do" and doing it. Jesus wasn't always nice about how He handled things, though.
Additional: Are you forgetting how Christ stormed into the temple and threw around stuff? And Christ stills loves retards and failures.

Jesus wasn't being nice when he walked into the temple and pushed over tables and whipped the preists! God wasn't nice when he put the tree of knowledge in the garden and expected eve not to eat from it, and then punish her for it! God wasn't nice to the egyptians when he sent the plagues! There is no commandment that states thout shalt be nice!
However, the bible does teach respect. Sometimes you can respect someone without being nice to them. Sometimes it is wrong to be nice. It is difficult as we do not know the circumstance, but If they are truly christian they God will tell them how to behave!

Yes in theory they should be nice. I am a Christian but sometimes (around the 14 of the month) ;-) I can get grouchy. but I think you mean that a Christian as a rule is nice and tries to control the rudeness from within. I think you are right. I think we ought to remember that we are representing Jesus.

Absolutely. The book of Ephesians tells us to never let anything out of our mouths that would discourage or put down others, only things that are uplifting and encouraging. The book of James is all about "taming your tongue," it tells us that our words are like rudders to a ship--they can steer us in good directions or make us crash on the rocks if we don't keep hold of them. The book of proverbs says that "reckless words pierce like a sword, but the words of the wise bring healing." There are plenty of other references to speaking kindly...Gimme a shout if you'd like some specific ones.

Well just like everyone else. You can have a belief and not "live in it everyday". It is when we live in faith that we become more Christ-like. When we put it into practice.
Not all people do that with their faith. Not all people practice what their taught after they leave the place of worship.
Cannot blame Christianity for those christians that have not gotten to Spiritual maturity yet, no more than you can blame a baby for being slow to walk/talk etc...

You don't have to necessarily be nice. God said that all you have to do is abide by his rules. But if they are always putting people down then that is something different. They should be up-lifting. But it is their choice if they want to go to church and praise the lord and then turn around start bringing people down. You let the lord deal with it he has a plan stored inside.

Well, that is wrong to be so rude, but Christians aren't perfect. No one is perfect but god. Some people attend church every week and think that makes them a Christian whether or not they apply what they learn in church to their real lives or not.

Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you, the Bible teaches kindness and forgiveness throughout. Aside from the Bible, I would hope, we as a human race, would treat each other with kindness and respect. An ugly heart with hate and disdain is a bleak life.
