My favorites in Latin are "Tantum Ergo"..."Ave Verum Corpus" ...and "Adoremus Te, Christe."

My favorite more contemporary hymns are "Christ Be Our Light'..."I Am the Bread of Life"...and "Shepherd Me, O God."

Eric, I don't understand wanting the Mass to hurry and end. The time that Heaven touches earth, being in the presence of our God in the flesh, etc. Perhaps you are too young to yet appreciate what is happening.

Caffeind, yes Ave Maria is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Great answer.

Daisy, I like that one too. It's very uplifting and a great one for the opening hymn.

Soundtrack, you could have just said "I used to be Catholic and my favorite hymn was...." But answering a question meant for Catholics and saying you are a "recovering Catholic" is in very poor taste. I don't understand why some of you are so rude.

veritas, it's nice to see someone else listing a traditional hymn. God bless you too, thank you.

I am more traditional......
Holy God, we Praise thy Name (a Monsignor I once met called this the "national anthem of the Catholic Church")
is my all time favorite.
Others- may not QUITE be Catholic
All Creatures of our God and King
Praise to the Lord

I cannot stand "On Eagle's Wings." Music to God shouldn't sound like it belongs on "As the World Turns." However, if I were forced into a contemporary liturgy, I wouldn't mind "I am the Bread of Life" or even "Sing to the Mountains" which sounds good on an organ.

i replaced into raised Methodist, so i actually appreciate making a music lots of the hymns i replaced into raised on, including How super Thou artwork and astonishing Grace. As for brand spanking new hymns i've got found out when you consider that becoming to be Catholic, i like On Eagles Wings and Be no longer Afraid. At Christmas time, i like all the hymns when you consider that they spark my Christmas memories of creation and the buzz of waiting for Christmas day.

My favorite hymn is "Canticle of the Sun." That's the one that goes, "The heavens are telling the glory of God, and all creation is shouting for joy!" I love all the contemporary hymns you listed, too. I don't know any of the Latin ones because I was born in the 70's, after Vatican 2.

"Ave Maria" for the pure beauty of the music, "Amazing Grace" for the pure beauty of the words (and yes, I know it isn't a "Catholic" hymn.)

My favorite is Tantum Ergo. We just sang that last week at the Corpus Christi procession.

After that I love, "Sweet Sacrament, We Thee Adore."

God bless you and thanks for filling my head with sweet music this morning!

"Let us all go now in peace" I know it is not a hymn but it signals the ending of the mass and oh what a feeling.

I'm now a recovering Catholic, but I must say "The King of Glory" is my fave. The song's verse is way minor (Bm, I think) and the chorus comes in major(D). I enjoy the "Traditional Israeli Folk" sound to it.
