The only certain way to learn your ancestors' origins is to research them back generation by generation.

Petrie : Scottish Patronymic name that is derived from the given name Peter. As a given name, Peter became popular after the Norman conquest of England, and Peter was often used as a surname by itself. Petrie is a dimunitive form of Peter, that was more popular in Scotland.

As a last name, Ancestry.com suggests:

petrie
Scottish: from a pet form of the personal names Peter or Patrick.

But you will have to trace your family back generation by generation to really understand the root of the n ame.

You could also ask this question on the Petrie genealogy message boards at:

Good luck,

It can be interesting to know where a name originated... the problem is that there can be different opinions, or many places that the name shows up. The time frame were persons started using surnames is notorious for not having records, as we know them today.
The alternative (assuming you really are interested in your own heritage) is to work your ancestry back from yourself, until you hit the known ancestor, that you actually descend from... and search the available records for where he/she came from. It is FREQUENTLY different from the "accepted" origin (if there really is any one accepted place).
