I'm worried that our heating bill would go up in the winter if there are cracks or spaces in the dog door opening. Is this a standard problem with dog doors? Should I even bother getting one? Our dog is about 24 inches high, if that helps.

Some of the new ones appear to seal out the weather pretty good. As for strange things coming into your house, some of the dog doors work with a collar on the dog. Only the animal with the matching collar can enter. It won't open for any other animals.
Most of the major online vet supply stores have these.

Well I don't live in Canada, but the low 30's is not uncommon here. The one I got has a plastic door that has a magnet so it stays closed and has a weather strip around the door. It is the greatest thing I ever did. I was having trouble training my little Terrier mix. once I got the door it was done. Then when I got my Beagle and Pit pups the older Terrier trained them for me.

I don't think you would like them in cold weather. Most home supply stores have samples in stock as do some large pet stores. Go look at them. They are not what I would consider super energy efficient.
