Make sure you have enough RAM. If you have less than 1GB, it'll crawl. I'd recommend 2GB or more.

More RAM is definitely a starting point. I haven't had much of the slowdown and issues that others seem to have...I think a lot of that has to do with having 2 gigs. Also, you have the option of turning off the visual effects like Aero and switching to windows classic views and whatnot. Depending on your graphic card, you may experience a speed boost without the bells and whistles on.

Also, ultimately, keep in mind for the first few weeks your computer is indexing files and stuff...I had severe slowdowns, especially in transferring and copying files....but as your hard drive indexes itself, you will find these slowdowns decreasing over time.

Okay well to speed up Windows Vista (create a system restore point in case you screw something up): -Increase the paging file to at least 1.5Gb (R. Click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Performance Settings > Advanced tab > Change > Custom: Set the initial and maximum size to 1500Mb > OK) -Get rid of unimportant system processes (Not so sure about Vista but... Start > Run > Type 'msconfig' > OK > Startup tab > uncheck unneeded processes > OK -Download Malwarebytes and CCleaner, install and run. -$ Add more RAM. RAM is always good, check your motherboard as to what type it needs (usually DDR2) or take it to a computer nut, they'll put some in for you (I recommend around 2Gb). -If you want, backup your computer and format with XP. Runs much faster, but check your computer's drivers, make sure they are compatible.
