If you took your shoes off in my house, I would tell everyone else to follow what you did! Taking off shoes as you come into the house is not a "big" deal in my household. However, when in anyone else's I usually follow what they do or simply ask. But as for me in my house, take off your shoes as much as want!
Interesting question...

I would thank you for taking off your shoes.
As a Westerner, I think that this is a good custom. We do not wear shoes in our house and we ask that our guests remove them as well. It does seem to be becoming more the norm now. Most people I know do remove their shoes in their own home and do the same at ours without even being asked.

Everyone has different standards and cultural beliefs on this matter. Myself, when I first enter someone's home that I have not been to before ... once the door is answered, I look down ... if I see a pile of shoes .. I take mine off. If there are no shoes just inside the door (or an obvious rack for them if a small gathering) ... I leave them on.

It depends on the household, but personally, I get offended if someone comes into my house and doesn't remove their footwear - I don't want all that outside grime tracked into my house. It's not so much a person making themselves at home, it's a cleanliness issue for me.

I don't think I would think anything at all. I know that some people take their shoes off indoors and others don't, either way is fine with me. I always go barefoot but just for comfort, I don't pay attention to what other people wear or don't wear on their feet even when they're visiting me, unless they were coming in with *loads* of mud on their shoes!

well, I would think it was great respect-if someone came to my home and took off their shoes. I do know different cultures do this but at my niece's house in the u.s.-thats automatic to take off shoes when entering their home and I like it myself so I can't say that being a problem here.

When I lived in USA and had carpeting, I did not like people to go barefoot on the carpets. Feet have oil, oil sticks to carpet and attracts dirt.
I live in Asia now, have tile and marble floors, everyone here takes their shoes off. It's also so much cooler.
The person who said that you should ask your host is correct.

Asians remove their footwear when they enter other's houses as a sign of respect .........not to dirty their floors with their shoes.

Wouldn't bother me. It's my rule to take your shoes off in my house. But the dirt is still tracked through the house.

I would think you were respecting my home. Just by the fact you took your shoes off it would make me think you were concerned with whether or not you might get my floor dirty. I think that's wonderful for you to do that. Not many people do anymore.
