"Study without thinking and you are blind" Anybody can read a book, go to school, or listen to lectures. It is easy to fill your head with facts and figures. Confucious is pointing out that learning is much more than facts, it requires synthesis and contemplation of the facts to realize what truths lie behind them, and how they can be of benefit.

"Think without studying and you are in danger" Making decisions and becoming enlightened requires information. Without knowledge, you can never attain wisdom . In other words, you need to have the facts, before you can really comment or pass judgement on anything.

Confucious is contrasting the two statements in an effort to show that thought and learning go hand in hand.

I think the sentence you are talking about, the better translation should be "To learn without thinking, one will be lost in his learning. To think without learning, one will be imperilled."

To learn without thinking means one is very unlikely to apply such knowledge, thus will feel very lost in his learning. Because one does not know what he/she is learning anyway. And by thinking, one can learn more related things as well.

To think without learning is more dangerous. Let me give an example. If you think that as long as you buy a stock, you will earn, than you are in danger of losing your savings because you never learn what are the mechanics behind that allow one to earn when he/she buy stocks. That is thinking without learning.

if you only read the words on a page, you don't really grasp the concept...and you need to know what you are talking about before you act
