Shiva, Krishna and Sadguru are 3 different names of One only

Krishna picks up a huge mountain on his little finger to save his loved ones

shiva drinks poison to save others from sure death

and a Sadguru takes away/burns sins of his disciples to make them pure and eligible for enlightenment

In many scriptures it is stated that there is no difference between a Satguru and God(Shiva). If Shiva is slighted he may pardon us but if Satguru is slighted, Shiva won't pardon us. Such is the greatness of Satguru who guides his disciples to the feet of God. In fact, the outer form may differ, but most of the time, god himself assume the form of Satguru to guide the pupils. We may take the example of Vyasa. It is said in the 'Vishnu Sahasranama' "Vyasaya Vishnurupaya'. Hence there is no doubt that the Lord incarnates as a Satguru. In the case of Adhi Sankara also, Lord Shiva himself incarnated in Kerala to lead the world out of darkness.

I'm not sure whether Shiva is an actual being, very likely he is mythical, an archetype of a type of living guru, one who destroys your delusions but does it unmercifully, which, in my opinion is actually the most merciful, because delusions are so deep-seated there really is no compassionate way to rid yourself of them, which is a good place to segway into the reason you need a satguru.

My understanding is a satguru is just another name for guru, which means one who dispells darkness. Darkness in a human being is becoming attached to limited ideas of who and what you are and what reality is. The world is generally in darkness because it believes people are isolated, private individuals and that consciousness ends at their skin and that they are limited to their 5 sense. Most people are only in touch with a limited version of their soul. The soul's full potential is to be conscious of it's energy field which surrounds it's physical body and has major energy centers called chakras. Especially the heart and head centers. Most people are asleep to these and a guru can help to awaken them.

This is what is meant by enlightenment, when the asleep soul awakens and is illuminated by the divine light of consciousness. Then the self-created limited version of consciousness merges with the fabric of consciousness that connects all beings.

This potential is dormant in all human beings and is the goal of life in a human body, to awaken to the soul. Mainstream religion is generally a set of rules and moral code to help the soul evolve so that it is intelligent and pure enough to get to the point when it can hear the guru's argument and realize it's true nature.

Shiva is beauty, truth, and Paramatma or God. It is said if we take one step towards God He takes two steps towards us which he does through Satguru.
