Generally animals that are healthy and well treated can be considered 'happy'. If your dog is active, lots of waggy tails and licks, no signs of boredom (like destructive behaviour) I think you can assume he's content.

Keep an eye on his vital signs. If his nose is wet and his tail is up you will know he is comfortable and happy. Also watch his body language - drooping tail and slow slouchy walk means he isn't happy. Also dull eyes are a sign of unhappiness in dogs.

Most happy dogs are playful. Act happy to see you. An unhappy dog may not eat.

If YOur dog wags his tail mostly on his right then you know he is REALLY happy. If your dog tail is always down that means he is sad. As long as his tail is up you know that he is glad.
