Its not like science has recently proved it. Its more than obvious to anyone who cares for agriculture and the breeding of crops. Anyone who observes the real world will notice that there are many plant species which possess gender. Some even possess both genders, some exclusively one gender. But that news is as old as any other news of the physical world. No surprise someone wrote in down in a book long time ago.
