While it is generally accepted that your level of intelligence remains constant for your adult life, it is also true that most people don't use the brains they were given to the full.Sometimes there is a marked underuse due to lack of effort or opportunity.

If we call efficient use of your own mind brainpower then there are ways to increase it.As has already been mentioned you should read more and more diversely - books (more classics and less 'pulp' fiction, maybe try a new genre), newspapers (try the broadsheets and read the editorials, the opinion and analysis columns and the arts supplements) and magazines (not Hello! or Loaded but ones that specialise in subjects like politics, music, science, film or your favourite hobby - where the writing is good).Do crosswords and puzzles and play games like chess and scrabble.Learn a new language.Take a science or litterature course.Practise a new skill or hobby and travel at home and abroad.

Also there are other things you can do that are not so direct but may help.Take fish oil capsules daily - apparently omega 3 and 6 are good for concentration.Listen to classical music.Keep your mind open to new influences and discuss ideas with people who are knowledgeable in a particular area.

Check out some books by authors like Tony Buzan and Edward De Bono - you'll learn about mind maps and lateral thinking.

Finally, if you're concerned about your score on IQ Tests you can increase it by about 5 points (maybe by as much as 10 points with a lot of the above) just by practising them - this is called test sophistication.A good bookshop should have some - There are many by Ken Russell and Phillip Carter.

Hope that helps.Good luck.

You are born with a potential to acheive a certain level of intelligence. Depending on the level of nurturing you receive this will dictate if you reach your potential.

Intelligence isnt the be all or end all, high IQ people have problems just as low IQ people have.
Balance and average is the norm.

Although having a higher intelligence does suggest you have a somewhat more advantaged existence.

If you feel you have a potential that needs honed enlist in some enrichment activities, eg subjects that you show a great interest in.

If you merely want to brush up your general knowledge try reading round lots of different areas, and pick up tit bits of info. Have discussions with friends, listen to others views.

You need both good genes and good exposure to be intelligent.
If you have the genes, then that is taken care of. For the exposure all you can do is feed your brain. You need to have the will to learn. Ever notice how two brothers living in the same house can have different interests (same genes and almost same circumstances). One may turn out to be an expert in music and the other in computers. Now both are intelligent but differently. The reason they both know so much about their respective fields is because they are interested in it. Find out what interests you and you can never fail. Ok, ask yourself this question, 'If I have all the time in the World, and all the money to do anything and no is going to question me, what would I be doing?'
Do that.

Apparently every musical instrument you introduce a child to gives them two IQ points. Figure out the different levels of meaning in Shakespeare and the Bible. Grasp the holistic mind-expansion of eastern philosophy. Write songs, poems, stories and articles. Read works of genius like Einstein, Jung and Shakespeare. Practice I.Q. tests. Figure out solutions to the worlds problems. Study the worlds wisdom traditions. Meditate. Recognise and clarify your delusions.

Do all these and you will leave those intellectual dwarfs in Mensa behind.

Find a subject you like. Anything. Look things up on the internet. If you want to know how something works, even the slightest bit curious, google it. It works. Read anything and everything. If you have a problem concentrating, try metitating and learn how to relax.

Wikipedia is an awesome start. Find something that interests you, read everything about it, and grasp it, and if you don't understand something along the way, look it up.

you can certainly reach your full intellectual potential by stimulating your mind with things that you woudnt normally find stimulating (perhaps reading, doing math problems, etc.)...do this little by little and eventually you will find that you know a lot more in the end...the mind can easily be exercised just like the body can...is yahoo answers a good way to do that? it may or it may not be...it depends on what you make of it...
