Actually they are not.

Moths navigate by the moon. Because a lightbulb is much closer than the moon their navigation system gets thrown off and the circle the lightbulb, because they think they are flying in a straight line.

Moths bump into the bulb because they fly in a zig zag pattern to fool predators, but the are not trying to fly into the light.
