Well there are a range of things that effect brain function.

For example, for normal human beings we go through a daily cycle, with the late afternoon being when we feel the most tired.

There are lots of reasons for this. One is, that when we are awake, the body is building up a chemical that makes us sleepy. So in the morning, after a proper rest, we will have the least of this chemical in our body. After being awake for 24 hours, our brain function is so impaired it is like being drunk (and doctors do 20+ hour shifts in hospital emergency wards).

Many cultures...spain and china for example, have the habit of a midday siesta which will help them be more awake and active in the afternoon.

Other things that can effect us are diet. After eating a lot of carbohydrates (rich, bread, potatos, pasta) we feel sleepier due to the body secreting a chemical that will make us rest to aid digestion.

Depends on the person. A guy i know cannot sit down and do any work whatsoever at night. instead he gets up early and does corrections in the morning before school. (he's a teacher by the way).

I think it's your body rhythm or your body clock that controls that. Some people tend to work better at night because their body rhythms are most active at night. It is just a matter of ease and comfort.
