We can certainly apply today's definition of a dynasty to the Spurs... And they're more of a "dynasty" than any team in any other sport at this point in time. I think the Patriots have to win the Super Bowl this coming season to be put back into the dynasty category. Baseball dynasties, forget it.
And you're right about how close the Spurs have come to winning a 6th title this year... of course, being close doesn't mean anything in the history books, and 20 years from now not many people will remember how close they came to doing that...the only thing that will count is the final result. But I think they've got at least 2 or 3 more titles to win with this group.
The Celtics of the 60s had at least 4 or 5 "lucky" breaks that happened to them (or they MADE them happen) which, had they gone the other way, would have cost them the title (sometimes these happened in earlier rounds, sometimes they happened in the finals)... but again, the only thing that counts is the final results, which is a run of championships no pro sports team has ever done in any sport, before or since. And only knowledgeable NBA fans know about those things, and how close the Celtics came to being knocked off a few times during that run...the casual fan just sees a list of NBA champions and sees that the Celtics basically never lost (and assumes that the rest of the NBA sucked).
The NBA really sucks today in terms of the overall level of play, but that's not the fault of the Spurs. All you can do is play who you play.
And in case anyone wants to know how teams today would do if they played against teams from the 70s or 80s, check out how teams do against the Spurs.... not very well.
The Spurs are unquestionably the best team in the NBA, one reason being they are by far the smartest team in the NBA. And no one is really close.
The Spurs might not have the best regular season record every year, but they're the toughest team to beat in a playoff series, especially since all playoff rounds are now best of 7.
No doubt about it, by today's standards, the Spurs are absolutely a dynasty.

Let's see how many times in the play-offs in the last 10 years? How many championships? May not have many MVP's, but then again that is not what they are in to...It has always been the goal of the Spurs, as players and a team, that the individuals do what is best for the team, WoW maybe that is why it is called a team sport...They have the highest winning percentage of ANY , I repeat, ANY sports team. You go Spurs

Of course! they work so hard and yet they go unnoticed! They are the NBA Champions and should be treated as a championship team! They are so not boring. People just want bloodshed but thats not professional basketball, thats sports entertainment. if they want to see drama then change the channel and watch WWE!
