I've had a few sites hosted on WordPress suddenly get a surprisingly high Google PageRank rating - is this because they have no ads? Are hosted on Wordpress?

No I do not think so.
Firstly WordPress is a competitor with Google's own blog platform Blogger.
Next Adwords and Adsense are Google products which Google likes.
If you have a high page rank then you must have a good quality site with plenty of unique content and links from other ranking sites.

No, Wordpress is just providing a free blog hosting. The reason could be many. some of them like:
1) Wordpress has a Tag cloud which links to the blog or post.
2) You blog must have good content & also in SERPs of Search Engines
3) Some might link to ur blog or post. Since this lick will be within content so its of more priority....
4) Your Blog RSS must have been in RSS directory
5) Lastly ur friend might have subscribed to your blog RSS
In April/May 2007 PR update, many new sites has gain pretty good Page Rank.
