I'm really skinny on the inside, I swear.

The self is definitely different from the body, yet it is related to the body. Self is the unchanging entity while body is ever changing. Actually it is the unchanging reference of self that makes us aware of the changes.
We exist on this planet in different levels. There are seven levels of our existence. The body, the breath, the mind, the intellect, the memory, the ego and the self. Body is the grossest level. Self is the subtlest level. Everybody here are conscious about the body. But a few are conscious about the self. For reaching the consciousness of the self, we need to overcome the other six levels with awareness.
Without the self, the body can exist. Body is nothing but matter. Self is the life force within the body. Self can not exist as self itself without body.

The self is not separate from the body until we die, or sometimes when we travel in our sleep (Astral travelling). After death, the body has no 'soul' or 'self' to animate it, and it reverts to its individual parts, with the help of micro-organisms.
Various religions will tell you what happens to the self after death, but they're only guessing, and probably all wrong. I wouldn't worry about it until it happens. And then it doesn't matter what you were told!

Self is your spirit, your soul, it's what your energy is.
Body is simply a shell, really means nothing, just a machine that we ride around in for a few minute decades while we learn what we are supposed to in this life, then the body dies and our spirit continues onward and upward for the next lesson.

the self is different from the body because the self is perception. perception perceives control over the body, and the body is essential to the existence of the self, but they are not the same.

Interesting question.

This is actually an age-old philosophical problem known as the "mind/body problem".

There are generally two schools of thought (with branches, of course) on the subject, monosim and dualism.

Monoism is the belief that they are not mutually exclusive of each other, while dualism says that they are.

See here for more info:

Hope this helps!

I really like your question. Personally, I feel they are different. I agree with Inday and several others above. I couldn't improve on what's already been said.
