I think I know what you are talking about, but I don't know a name for it. It's a simple, cheap way of measuring distance as a function of time. To measure this for a falling ball, tie a paper tape to the ball. Run the tape between the clapper and bell of an electromechanical doorbell, with carbon paper between the clapper and the tape. The clapper vibrates at roughly a constant rate, so the interval between a pair of tick marks represents a unit of time. It's good for a classroom experiment, and is also a good example of creativity and ingenuity applied to a measurement need.
