Dear lightdion,
i think it would depend on what the make up of your team was. For example if you replaced Big Z with Big E on the Cavs you would be in a boat load of trouble becaus of Dampier's inability to score. And his lack of a post game would not draw a double team which helps set up jumpers for the other players.
I'd probably take big Z just because of his height 7'3 guys are hard to find.
However, you got to look at the team-- some teams need a tough guy and i think Dampier fits that mold more.
Big Z is a typical Euro player who has pretty good foot work, a decent outside game- but ultimatley is soft.
Those are my two cents.

Big Erick Dampier can play defense? I think you mistaken him for Desagna Diop of the Dallas Mavericks. It was Diop who gave Duncan problems last year in the western conference finals, not Dampier. Big Z is a former NBA All-Star and excels farther than Erick in every catergory (points, rebounds, blocks). At least Ilgauskas has a decent post game and he does alter a lot of shots in the paint. Dampier has been pretty useless after he signed that fat contract with the Mavericks. Dampier's only productive season up to date was when he overplayed himself during his contract year at Golden State to fool Dallas into overpaying him for more than what he was worth. I was so glad the Warriors let him go or else they'd be biting the bullet right now.

Hey no wonder its Big Z. Z can rebound well in the offensive end. He was an All-Star before. Before clicking your question, I thought Big E was Elvin Hayes. Hey! Erick Dampier was called by Shaq as 'ERICKA' during last year's NBA finals. Z shoots 88% from the line while E shoots only 46%! It is Pretty OBVIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Your question is kinda misleading. There's only one "Big E" in the history of the league and that's none other than the great Elvin Hayes, one of the greatest power forwards of all time. As for Mr. Ilgauskas, I don't recall him being referred to as the Big Z, and for one thing, he doesn't deserve the tag. To answer your question though, I'd rather have Eric Dampier. He's stronger and, as you said, defends quite well. He stood his ground against Shaq in last year's finals. Peace.

BIG Z...hands down.
Both guys are the same age (born 1975) but just compare their career stats...
Big Z averaged about 14 pts, 8 reb, 1.7 blk and shoots about 80% from the line in his career per game.
Big E averages about 8 pts, 7.5 reb, 1.5 blk and shoots about 60% from the line in his career per game.
The numbers speak for themselves. Big Z's game isn't pretty but it is effective. He's got more size than Dampier and just has overall more basketball intelligence. Surprisingly, they make around the same amount of money.

Dampier.
If the time spent watching Jordan, Bryant and now James has taught anyone anything, even if you score 50 points, you might still lose if you have a sieve in the back.
Besides, Ilgauskas doesn't really have much of an offensive game if you compare him to other centres in the game.
That and it's very embarassing to have a guy that's 7'3 and coaches still yell "run the iron boys! they're weak inside".
Dallas themselves are having this same discussion now, except instead of Ilgauskas, it Diop...
