He's regarded as one of the best pure shooters in NBA history. He led the Celtics to their 13th title in 1976. He was a very good passer and his endurance was remarkable.

Yes, very underrated.

And the funny thing is, the Celtics were very lucky to get him in the draft.

Because Bill Russell didn't announce his retirement until a couple of months after the 69 season, the Celtics went into the 69 draft thinking he would be back for the 1970 season.

Had they known that Russell was going to retire, they would have picked Luther Rackley (a center) in the 69 draft as their first pick (Rackley ended up being drafted in the 3rd round, one pick prior to the Celtics' pick...the Celtics didn't have a 2nd round pick that year). Rackley, a 6-10 center out of Xavier, had a 5 year, 221 game career in the NBA.

But, thinking that Russell would be back for the 69-70 season, the Celtics choose Jo Jo White in the first round (HOF guard Sam Jones retired after the 69 Finals). That turned out to be the best thing that could have happened for them, and he played a key role in two championship teams (74 and 76).

And yes, he played in 7 all star games and was MVP of the 1976 finals.... a very underrated player.
