They say "Love is friendship caught on fire." Friendship is certainly essential to base the whole relationship on. Without that chemical "spark" of attraction to set the blaze, it is only just plain friendship. Enough for some people (i.e. arranged marriages, or marrying for money), but not all. I want the spark! The fascination, the passion, all that... even knowing the blaze eventually dies down and settles down to the deeply affectionate Friendship of a lifetime, it's the "spark" that gets you from batter up to first base and beyond, not just to home plate but winning the game of love!
So ya win some and ya lose some, but ya still gotta have the spark to get in the game.

That spark is what makes a relationship different from a friendship. It is essential.

There people go again putting way too much emphasis on this illusion called spark. Let me tell you something. This so called spark you refer to is ONLY!!! Dopamine. When you get that warm fuzzy feeling, in love caring deeply or that full blown lust... That is that pesky dopamine giving you that emotion high. Why screw up life over a feeling?
Your not that juvenile are you?

Yes, there must be a spark that will ignite a flame, whether it be intellectual, sexual, or friendly.

ABSOLUTELY!!! It's very important to feel that attraction, and have lots to talk about, interests. Whether they are shared or just intriguing.
