I think both are less shy about it when the opposite sex is not present and are among close friends. I know I'm much less likely to talk about it in front of girls. It varies a lot depending on the type of person too. There are boys who are shy about it and girls who aren't. I think sexuality in general is more open with boys and this affects shyness about masturbation.

I have no problem admitting it at all. I love to masturbate on occasion! When all my sisters and cousins and friends get together the subject has often turned to sex and masturbation and my hubby has overheard us and said that girls are more open about our sexuality with each other than guys are with other guys. My sisters and friends all know I had a few toys as well and it encouraged my older prudish sister to go out and buy some for herself. Unfortunately the liberation she found has overflowed and she has gone from prude to tart in a couple of years!!!

The boys I know only joke about it, they don't discuss their masturbation habits or even REALLY admit that they do it. The girls I know do not talk about it at all, and I'm glad about that because it's inappropriate to discuss with the general public. It's a personal thing that should be kept private.

The men and women I know discuss it in closed circles. Several of my female friends have no problem discussing sensitive topics, including sexual issues, with close friends. My male friends will joke about it but will also talk about it in a more mature manner if it comes up.

in my opinion the reason girls aren't as open as boys is because they like to be more private about what they do, they don't feel the need to be discussing it with everybody.
they share it with they partners but not often with the rest of the world like boys do.
girls are just more conservative when it comes to it. (actually not all girls some are more open than boys).
boys don't care they have a laugh about it girls enjoy it but in they own privacy.
