Hey Ryan,
i totally agree with you. Mainly because there are a lot of Kobe-haters. Even though the Raptors are not the class act of the NBA every other superstar you named plays the Raptors twice as well. More than that no NBA team wants 81 dropped on them- and you don't make it in the NBA. It wasn't like it was a blow-out and they put stiffs on Kobe-- they were NBA starters.
If you watched that game- Kobe made some difficult difficult shots (i bought a copy of the game off of ebay) and no other star could have made those shots.
When Kobe is in that zone nobody can stop him. He had 63 points in 3 quarters vs the mavs, so he could have easily dropped at least 81 on them if he played the whole game vs the mavs (mainly against Josh Howard and Greg Buckner)- darn good defenders... Off course those haters will probably say the Mavs play no defense (apparently good enough to win 67 games this year and 60 plus the year before).
It's the second highest output in NBA history and people who hate Kobe will always hate Kobe and will try to diminish it. Yes it was a regular season game against the Raptors- just like Wilt's 100 was a regular season game against a bunch of much shorter players.
The bottom line is the people who hate Kobe will always hate Kobe- but you evaluate objectively he's a great basketball player and the 81 points was a heck of a performance whether you like or hate kobe.

I will give you a comparison because I saw both of the games I am about to mention.
Lakers v. Raptors Kobe/regular season 81 points
Bulls v. Celtics Jordan/ playoffs 63 points
The Lakers/ Raptors game happened in the regular season and the first 3 quarters were CRAP! The game was damned boring and is only remarkable because Kobe started hitting three pointers. The Lakers looked weak the whole game against a scrub team.
The Bulls/Celtics - A playoff game in which the Bulls were totally overmatched by a team that was easily on of the best 2 or 3 teams in the league for a good period of time. There was NO REASON to believe that the Bulls would have any chance to compete in even one of those games. HOWEVER, Mike already had a reputation as a great player in much the same way LeBron does now. The difference between what Mike accomplished then and what LeBron is doing now is that Jordan responded in heroic fashion where LeBron just kind of happens to be on the court. What's more both team were trying DESPERATELY to snuff the other team out.
Taking people to the hole is the most emphatic representation of domination that can be expressed on the basketball court. It is the equivalent of a football team executing running plays two out of every 3 plays and getting a first down every time. It is ABSOLUTELY DEMORALIZING. Not to mention Mike was hitting a menagerie of short range jumpers and freaking triple teams like they were ghosts.
Watching a guy hit jumpers against a wack team is anti-climatic after such performances. What's more, Jordan was consistently more captivating than most any player I have ever watched at a time when the league was much more talented and competitive due in large part to the fact that Michael had an unquenchable desire to thoroughly dominate the opposition. He repetitively kicked the opposition in the mouth and groin whenever possible. Today's players seem more interested in seeing themselves on video games and SportsCenter, bad motive.
Sorry for the bad news... It just not as impressive. (shoulder shrug)
It's kind of like comparing sex with a good looking, boring chick with one that is willing to perform contortionist, tantric sex. There would be no comparison.
Enjoy your missionary basketball, it makes me sleepy.

I mean Matt Bonner guarding Kobe? Come on...
...the only thing that Matt Bonner can do is hit an occasional 3 for a big man.
Matt Bonner guarding Kobe is like Kobe taking candy from a baby.
81 points is a remarkable feat no doubt, but the 81 points occurred in the era of the 3 point shot...
...I mean "Ski" Jones went for 62 points in the 1994 NIT hitting 12 three pointers. Back in the old days that would have only been 50 points which was not something remarkable.
I think the thing about Kobe and his 81 is that if he knew how to pass in 1999 and 2003, then maybe an arguement could be made for a Lakers fivepeat...
...kind of like Deron Williams who went for 2 points in over 40 minutes closing out Golden State, the Texas native Deron Williams started going for over 30 points a game in the Western Conference Finals taking out the best post season player of the 2007 NBA playoffs up to that time in Carlos Boozer who was totally dominant in the playoffs until Deron decided to shoot the ball instead of going for his 16 ppg average with Carlos Boozer being totally neutralized in the 2007 Western Conference Finals just as Kobe always neutralized Shaq by not passing to him in crunch time or not passing to Shaq period.
Deron Williams personally handed the Spurs the Western Conference Finals championship by shooting all of the time and never passing to Carlos Boozer.
I mean how can Deron William go from 2 points in over 40 minutes in closing out Golden State to scoring over 30 a game in the Western Conference Finals?

specific, it replaced into as quickly as in opposition to the raptors, yet whilst the raptors are so risky, how come no person else has come almost putting up eighty one against them? Or yet another group for that undertaking? and beneficial, he was hogging the ball, however the remainder of the gang shot 33% and kobe shot 61%, why would not he prefer to take the great photographs? And do you haters have a archives of that the lakers have been down 18 factors previous due interior the third quarter in that game? He knew he mandatory to take over and that's strictly what he did. i replaced into between the considered necessary 18,000+ enthusiasts which have been there that nighttime time and it replaced into as quickly as dazzling. notwithstanding that they have been down 18, i replaced into on no account scared when you consider that i knew kobe was having a merely ideal game. eighty one freakin components guy, superb. How approximately whilst kobe outscored the great dallas group in 3 quarters, sixty 2-61? i'm specific you think it particularly is overvalued too. I understand curiously like i copied Nick C's respond, notwithstanding i swear, i did no longer even study the solutions before i commented, hehe.

I don't say it's weak, but I do say that one game is no measure of any player's greatness in any sport. If any of you hoopheads know a damned thing about MLB, then you know that such household names as Pat Seerey and Bobby Lowe have each hit four homers in a single game, but neither rightfully is regarded as an alltime slugger.
Yeah, same lines, Alva Lee "Bobo" Holloman threw a no-hitter in his first start and only complete game but is a mere curiosity, never linked with greatness.
The alltime gimme the ball Kobe Allstars:
Wilt
Me (Kobe)
Elgin
David Thompson
You lilttle Bryant homos need more than one game to base your thin arguments to Kobe greatness on.

I don't know how anyone can say that scoring 81 points in a game was weak, especially since most of the people saynig couldn't score 1 point in an NBA game so they should consider it in those terms, basically you're all weak too. I would like to say, though, that the Raptors were one of the most defensively challenged teams in the NBA that season, Jalen Rose and Morris Peterson spent most of the game guarding him, and he was still in there shooting and playing with his team up twenty and well past the point where a coach with class (DON'T BE CONFUSED PHIL JACKSON, I KNOW THAT'S NOT YOU!!!!!) would have pulled his star out of the game. I don't wish harm on people, but it would have been fitting if Kobe would have torn his ACL and had to retire because he's in there padding his stats and running it up on the Raptors.

kobe is a great player, he is not good but great.. some here are saying that he is not good becasue they cant accept the fact that he can take over a single game (maybe against their favorite team).. irritated by kobe's style, way of talking.. its all part of this game..
kobe's 81 point game is the highlight game maybe for the last half century? so lets just give the man the respect he mostly deserve for that game.... he was in a different zone in that game.. i believe that zone was so called "the weak zone"

kobe is still one of the best player out there and i dont think everyone saying that particular game is weak though it is not that phenomenal compared to mike did in the playoff because of its essentiality in the game.ill take kobes 81pts because its a courageous act to take more shots and not to think being criticize by others..its not fair to blame him to score more in a weak defense because he did not ask them to go weakling with their defense.kobes 81 is 2nd best mark and *best *will never be a *weak*of its sense.

Its called reaching for an excuse to hate Kobe. No matter how small the reason is and if its small enough then they make up reasons. It was bad defense. The Raptors played 81 other games that season and no one even came close to scoring that much against that terrible defense.
