If you want to do "internet connection sharing" you will NEED to "network" the 2 computers, wither with a proper network cable and a hub, or a "Crossover cat5 cable" if you want to avoid a hub.
Once you have a working network, runthe "Internet Connection Sharing" wizard on PC with the modem and then run the shortcut setup utility it creates on laptop.

Plenty tutorials on basic networking on google

Alternatively you can buy a USB Networking cable, plugs into USB on both aneds allowing basic network functions via it.

As far as I am aware you can't connect two computers to each over via modem to modem with a phone cord.

You can connect them via Ethernet card (that you use for high speed internet/network connections) But you have to purchase what is called a "Crossover" cable to do that. You can't just use a regular network cable.
