In the 30's and 40's, and somewhat into the 50's, jazz was th big popular music. By the 60's, the younger people were listening to rock & roll, but their parents were still listening to jazz. And many of the popular jazz singers from th 40's, like Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat "King" Cole, and Louis Armstrong were still around and influencing younger singers like Bobby Darin.
