E-Machines is a cheap brand its fine, not a high end office computer that becomes a game machine when the Network Admins not looking, some of us are smart we order cheap video cards that cannot do the video game stuff like 3d and cinematics. Just plain presentations with no sound card.
- But to speed up any computer, empty the recycle bin or trash can, clean the temporary files, and defrag the hard drive. Then check to see for spy-ware such as bots running and hiding; the newest anti-virus or Yahoo Tool bar has this option. This needs to be done every 2 months for an average computer office user.

1. When was the last time you defrag you hard-drive?
2. Have you dispose of your cookies, internet cache, spyware, and virus? Do you have a good utility program?
3. What is your computer`s Window OS? Windows 98SE and ME, 256MB is more then enough. Windows XP Home and Pro, 512MB or more would be good. Check your computer maker`s website for BIOS limitation on memory upgrades. See if there is a BIOS flash upgrade.
4. Check prices online for memory for your computer. Make sure you know the right memory type.
5. If your computer uses SDRAM and is under 750MHz CPU, stay with Windows ME. If you have anything faster, you might think about upgrading your Windows OS to XP. To check this, go to Start/Control Panel/System for system information.

Try some cleanup as per this list and see if it doesn't help with speed.
- set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
- review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
- from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
- run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
- periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot.

The best way to upgrade an old pc is to install more RAM. however, old style RAM is not cheap, e.g., 256MB of old style SDRAM costs more than newer 1GB DDRAM, and you really are better off buying a new PC. Having said that, in the old PC try to stick to basic MS Office functions and keep your files small (no huge files, or reduce their sizes - there are many ways to do that. If you dare, reformat your computer but make sure all your drivers are around. As good as upgrading RAM is good PC usage practices and habits.

go to http://www.ubuntu.com/ and have them send you the FREE operating system. No, it is not Windows or Macintosh, it is Linux. The OS comes with everything anyone needs to start out with. Internet browser, mail program, OpenOffice..you can open and save your Microsoft Office documents, you don't have to worry about viruses, and it is not a memory or hard drive hog so you can run it on a old pc. You can even boot straight to the CD to test out the operating system before you install. you can even install it to dual boot Windows if you want to.
If my 89 year old grandmother can use it and loves it, well, nuff said.
Give it a try, it is free, they even pay for the shipping on the cd so you have nothing to loose, or you could go spend som cash on a new pc.

We need to first know what is inside of your computer to offer any type of advice on it.
Right click on MyComputer icon on your desktop and go to Properties, on the General (tab) there should be a basic description of your processor and your memory amount.
