The author PK Dick believed it was empathy, however in my research I have found that answer to be incorrect. Probably just opposable thumbs and being able to walk upright. Otherwise my dogs share everything with me including the ability to understand me and communicate with me. One of them is a hearing ear dog and he alerts me to the door and the telephone (I am hearing impaired). Another has a selection of toys that say things and sing songs and he can actually distinguish which toy plays "singing in the rain" to tell you it's raining outside and which toy blows kisses - which he plays when I come home. Then there is Koko the gorilla with a huge sign language vocabulary.
Perhaps the only other answer is that man is the only animal who chooses to go to war for no damn good reason.Pax - C

We can observe our own thinking, get outside ourselves you might say. We can know our eventual fate and pass on information through time with writing. I like the broader definition of religion as your higher authority. So for Communism it's the state, some people only believe in themselves. It's definitely some sort of system we follow as a guide. And God can be nature and the forces of nature for some. Again God can be your higher power you look too, it can be materialism like money or houses. I'm for broad definitions that can include everyone so we have a basis for discussion instead of insurmountable wall. Walls we can at least see over and have some sort of dialogue.

A person is a person. Person=Human. Human=A unit in the animal kingdom. We are an animal!
Well what makes us unique from animals is that we can invent, we have true feelings that we can openly express. That our intelligence is far superior from animals. That we don't have that 6th sense that other animals have. (No fair.)

Humans ARE animals. ~
But instead of having better eyes or swift wings, or sharp claws, the ability build any of these externally. Thus having much greater facilities than all the other animals combined. Which laughingly is called intelligence.

we are animals who happen to be so cocky we believe we are the only things with reasoning on this planet, although we know elephants grieve, dolphins recognize theselves and even my cat has figurd out how to open my door. cause you know that instinct the ability to open doors see a lot of those in the wild. the only thing that seperates us is our ability to destroy and not play a part in the ecosystem, our ability to breed like roaches and take over the planet, our higher reasoning abilities, and our ability to believe in gods and fairies and dragons and demons not to mention to think that we are any better than other animals.

What makes us different from animals is that humans are self-aware. Self awareness is still a primitive state of knowing, I mean beyond self awareness the next evolutionary step is social awareness and beyond that is universal awareness. Evolution means evolving from unconsciousness to complete consciousness; its spiritual and has nothing to do with religion.

I'm not an organized religious person.
But what is a religion but a philosophy and belief-based life system? There is no answer to this question that isn't religious in base.

We are persons because we are born persons... human... There is a lot of difference between a person and an animal.

A person is capable of reasoning, thought, the ability to overcome primal instincts, and free will. Animals are slave to their most baser instincts, feed and breed. A person on the other hand is capable of interaction, feeling, art, free thought, and unlike animals we kill maliciously. Animals only kill their own in a dominance fight and when it benifits the herd or pack or pard. As persons we are capable of killing on a whim, for no reason. That is what seperates man from beast.

The reason you're asking the question is because you don't want to consider religious answers. The only answer is a religious one.
