What I think a lot of the people who are answering this question are missing is the fact that it is a lot HARDER to be a self made man today than it was 10, 15, 20 years ago... Priorities have changed drastically in general, and some of it IS the "poor" fault for not prioritizing correctly. This society is driven by a very materialistic nature. While people have always wanted to "keep up with the Jones'" it used to be that we could be satisfied with a lot less.
That aside, it says a lot about the state of the country when just recently they have decided to raise Min. Wage to be in line with (or more in line with) the cost of living that has been on the rise for a while now. At this point I'd have to say that I agree that the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer, but there are many different factors that contribue to that. Including this trend of outsourcing and even the advancement of technology.

This is a generality of society and not a specific. What I mean is studies show that people who were poor do work their way out of being poor if they work hard.
What it is meaning really, is that the gap between the wealth of the rich and the lack of wealth of the poor is a greater distance than it used to be.

This is a no brainer! I doubt if the rich would admit it, for the most part, and if they did, they would blame it on the poor!
But, the moral high ground is living more simply, so that more people may simply live! The people who seem to have the most difficulty with this concept, are generally the conservatives! *sm*

I would think rich people wouldn't say that... because that would possibly mean the end of their recent profits if anyone caught on...
but I've seen several reports that talk about studies that support the theory over the past few years on average... of course, there are always exceptions...
so many other people seem to think this...

I am sure in board rooms the amount of money that they are making and how they can increase profits never comes up.
What does it matter who says it. It is true. The middle class is shrinking.

Boy is this a loaded question or what? My opinion: Everyone has a chance to be successful.....not the SAME chance, but a chance nevertheless. It is obvious what the key is to success (higher education) and some people literally choose not to pursue it, to simply whine about not having it.
