So I recently just bought 5 neons for my 4 yr established tank. There havn't been any major temp. fluctuations, maybe +/- 2 degrees. Three days after buying them, one seems to be developing ich. I plan on taking him back to the store to get a proper diagnosis, as well as getting some treatment if it is required. What can I do about ich? Please describe the treatment process, as well as the odds of survival. Thanks!

Odds of survival are excellent if treated promptly.

For treatment you basically have two options. Use the one that suits you and your tank better

Change a large portion of the water, about 50-60% while cleaning the gravel very well.
Clean the filter and change all the media but leave out the carbon.
Add 1 tablespoons of salt per gallon of the tank.
Raise the temperature to 88-90 F. Raise it slowly, about 1 degree per hour. You may need to add an air stone or two depending on the type of fish and how heavily the tank is stocked. Treat for at least 7 days after you see the last white spots on any of the fish. After the treatment return the tank temperature to normal.

OR

Use a good ick medication as directed on the bottle. Try to find a medication that used Malachite Green as the active ingredient. (CAUTION: Malachite Green is a known carcinogen. Be careful not to get it on your skin!) Quick Cure is a good choice.
Change 25% or more of the water daily being sure to clean the gravel as you do so.
Continue the treatment for at least 7 days after you see the last white spots on any of the fish. After the treatment, return the carbon to your filter.

Hope that helps and feel free to email me if I can help further

The stress from moving from the pet store to your tank could have been enough to cause the fish to get ich. I recently successfully treated my tank for ich using CopperSafe. I like it because it doesn't have malachite green in it and thus will not have a chance of dying aquarium silicone. If you decide to use CopperSafe just follow the instructions.

The fish had ich when you bought them, and when you introduced the fish to tank, you contaminated your tank. Don't worry, it can be fixed. Go down to your local fish store and buy ich cure. It is a water treatment. It will help your fish and cure the rest of the tank.

There is a medicine you drop into the water. Instructions are on the bottle. Ask around for apet shop that sells good fish that have been well taken care of. be sure to leave them in the bag you bring them home in, in your fish tank ,floating around for a while until the water in the bag reaches the temp oh your tank. may take an hour or less.

Wow. Just reading this pisses me off. Look at what you wrote. Look at how far you went out of your way just to be an ***. You bottle things up? Bull. You replied to almost EVERYONE'S comment with a negative comment. GET.OVER.IT. What you need more than anything else is for someone to give you a dose of reality. The reality is: your life is not that bad. Grow up. We all go through rough patches in life, and that's okay. It's okay to be depressed sometimes, and it's okay to be sad, but it's not okay for it to be continuous. When I say it's okay to be depressed, I mean for a day or two. I had a really angry, angsty stage in my life. I was just completely mad about everything; it consumed my mood. I wallowed in self-pity and it didn't make anything better. In fact, it made it worse. The more I thought I was angry, the more I became that way, until finally I read a blog this guy wrote. He talked about how he was getting beaten at home, how he had a brain tumor that was slowly killing him and that all he did was wear black and listen to depressing music. He talked about his friend, who had just become homeless again because another foster family didn't want her. He said he came to in the hospital and she was crying because she had recently been raped. He came back the next day and she was smiling. She said,"I cry, and I cry again. I smile, and I smile again. And everything will be okay." "If she could smile, then why couldn't I? Why can't we?" After that, I felt like such a fool; an idiot for having the mindset that I had. He had his share of crap and realized even though it was bad, everything will be okay. It's your mindset. Stop freaking thinking about yourself. Put someone before you.

the fish you bought came with the disease. you have to treat the whole tank with ich cure for several days if you do not want problems with the other fish.
ich is fuzzy looking and the fish sometimes rub against stuff to scratch the itch.
