Those who answers before me are right, but i just want to add. Flash drives are, of course, a data storage tools.
The main diference from usual hard disks is that the how the data kept in the device, large hard disks use a magnetic data disks and flash disks uses chips (that's why they are so small).
I recommend you to buy at least 1 GB flash disks, because if you want to transfer large data, it would be easier.
Or, consider this alternative; why not try to buy flash cards?
(like SD cards or MMCs). Sd Cards can be used as storage device for many Digital Cameras, so you can use the SD as a 'film' for your digital camera, and as a storage device to transfers data.
n/b: In Windows Vista flash drives can be used as a RAM cards

Very simple! A flash drive is a small storage device that can be used to transport files from one computer to another. They are slightly larger than a stick of gum, yet many of these devices can carry all your homework for an entire year! You can keep one on a key chain, carry it around your neck, or attach it to your book bag. Using a Flash Drive A flash drive is easy to use. Once you have created a paper or other work, simply plug your flash drive into a USB port. The USB port will appear on the back of a desktop computer’s PC tower or on the side of a laptop. Most computers are set up to give an audible notice such as a chime when a new device is plugged in. This is normal. When you option to save your work by selecting “Save As,” you will find that your flash drive appears as an additional drive. Why Carry a Flash Drive? You should always carry a backup copy of any important work you’ve completed. As you create a paper or large project, make a backup on your flash drive and save it separate from your computer. A flash drive will also come in handy if you are able to print out homework at school. You can write a paper at home, save it to your flash drive, then plug the drive into a USB port on a school computer. Then simply open the document and print it out. Check with your teacher or librarian to see if this is an option. A flash drive is also handy for working on your paper or project on several computers at once. Carry your flash drive to your friend’s house for a joint project or for group study. Another reason to use a flash drive is that they are sturdier than floppy disks. A flash drive will survive teenage abusers much more successfully than floppy disks or CDs.

Flash drive is one name of many:
Also called "jump drive", or "memory stick" for example.
They are similar to the old 3.5 floppy disks. You can store information on them, such as word documents, pictures, spreadsheets, and transfer that information to another computer.
They almost always plug in through a USB port.
Typical sizes range from 256 MB on the small end, up to 2 GB or more. You get what is affordable, and what you need. I have a 512 MB flash drive, and it holds more than enough...but I don't use it for pictures or movie files. If you are into those, then get the highest capacity one you can.

Flash drives are portable solid state storage devices think of them as little hard drives without moving parts. They provide portable storage, great for transporting files. They store less data than hard drives and are slower, but offer advantages over DVDs and CDs like fast read write access. They sometimes are called thumb drives and are about the size of a thumb. They can be used to replace floppies as portable storage. They provide portable safe reliable data storage, Here are some examples:

Flashdrives are great - I have several. I use them mostly for backups and storage, although some can run programs, like the Ativa U3.
They come in different sizes. You buy according to your needs and the price is commensurate. The smaller ones, 128mb, are being practically given away. You can get a 256, 512mb, 1G, 2G, 4G, etc. As the size goes up, they get pricey. The newer computers don't have a floppy drive so flashdrives are a necessity if you need to transport data back and forth to school or work.

A flash drive is a modern version of the old floppy disk. Plenty plenty of advantages: capacity, reliability, speed. Go for a 2 gigabyte capacity. Even better, go for a card+reader combination instead of an ordinary flash drive - you can use the card and reader for other electronic components.

As simply as I can put it, a flash drive is a mini storage device. You can save stuff [power points, videos, ect.] on it and open it on another computer.
It's kinda like a new version of the floppy disk that plugs in to the USB port. They are small and light weight.

depends on what you are using it for. flash drives plug into your USB slot and they are basically a portable hard drive. the memory sizes these day can range from 128 megabytes to 16 gigabits for a USB flash drive.
Other types of flash memory are those that can be used in digital camera's, but I assume you are asking about the USB thumb drives.

It's pretty much a floppy disk but it goes into your computer's USB port. It's just a memory device. You can save things (such as videos, word documents, any computer files) onto it. How large of a drive you need usually depends on what you need it for. A 216 MB (one of the smallest sizes) should work well for word documents.

A flash drive is essentially a mini storage device used to store files such as photos, documents, music, etc. They usually run anywhere from 256MB to 4GB+. They are USB connected which makes it easy to transfer from PC to PC.
