yes by formatting all the existing data would be erased.
in case of a floppy disk if you are repeatedly getting this message for formatting the drive then it's a symptom that your floppy won't work anymore and it's time to get a new one.
I would suggest switching to a usb drive...it's not that expensive anymore and much more reliable and spacious than a floppy drive. Floppy disks always let you down at the most critical moments.

Yes, if you format the floppy (the old 3 1/2" disks) it certainly will erase all data.
The first floppies which were issued years ago were not formatted and had to be done by the operator prior to storing data. Later on, they could be purchased already formatted.
It's possible this is some sort of generic message. Have you checked to see if the disk drive is working? Go to Start,
Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Right-click on the drive and select Properties. It should tell you if it is working alright.
If it is, are you trying to open a file with the incorrect software, or a different version?

I had the same problems with my floppy drive. As someone stated, if it's asking you to format everytime, go ahead and splurg the $30 to go get a new drive.Sure flash drives are much easier, but I would still have a floppy---Just in case.

you must have used the disc in windows 98 to save and compress the data. this is not supported on any other operating system, you will have to find someone with windows 98 to get the files, or format it and loose everythink on there.

yes, if you format it will erase all of the data. Trust me I did it and lost everything. Format means to delete and reset.
