I have been very poor more than once and I have been very comfortable more than once. At 55 I am trying to pull out of poverty yet again. I was never embarrassed by it. I buy my clothes at thrift stores and yard sales. That's my business.
Some of us are poor. That is not a endictment against the poor. It happens. You can still live with integrity. Your value as a person is not dependent on physical wealth.
At one time, I taught during the day in an upscale private school, and in an inner city after school program later in the day. What I saw (in general, not totally) was that the poor valued people and the rich valued things. If that is the case, I will remain poor.

I was raised poor and was never ashamed of it. We had everything we needed and we were a very close family. And with that being said, I am the youngest of 5 and make the least amount at just under 100k a year. With an upbringing like I had, I appreciate the working person more. I tip like crazy and never judge someone by how much money they have. Oh and I still drive my 1990 GMC 1500 Sierra. 256,000 miles, rotted to the core but it still gets me where I need to go. And my wife drives a 1994 Cavalier with 141,000 miles. Being rich is a state of mind not a monetary value.

Do not allow the filth of the world and the seeming pleasures the rich boast to have get you down.
It always looks like bliss from a "poor man's " view when you are on the out side looking in!
Do you feel those who are rich in wealth are any more of a person than you?
The answer is no!
Even if you have no $$$$$ to flash, no fancy hummer 2 to cruise town , no vacations to Disney World, no extra to always keep your head above water- those who have this are not in touch with the realization of what it truly is to be happy!
Most are swimming in debt as well! They crtainly do not accept the world for what it is because their $$ can buy it all, right???? ...... NO!!!!!
Happiness is from within , not able to be bought !
Just keep in mind- the real riches of this world begin with- in!
Be proud of who you are.
There is nothing in this world that can cause greed except MONEY!

Being poor puts you on the blacksmiths anvil. You can take the easy way out, get broken and be discarded, go on welfare. Or you can keep getting pounded by the hammer, tossed into white hot coals only to be hammered some more, w/o any end in sight. But when he's done, your done, you can present yourself to the world as a peace of art that no one can scratch.

You come to the realization that being poor will make you appreciate the better "material" things in life much more....and you'll be grateful.
Remember just because someone is poor doesn't mean they are without pride.

By accepting it! Accept the lifestyle you lead. Appreciate what you have and don't dwell on what you don't have. Think also of the future; let it be your guiding light to keep going. Think that as you get older, educate yourself, you can get a nice career and make money.
I particularly like this quote by Oprah Winfrey and I think you may appreciate it as well:
"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough."
-Oprah Winfrey
Good luck and hang in there! : )

Self esteem should not be based on the amount of money you have, but rather what type of life you are living. I grew up poor and am by no means rich financially, but I have a lot in so many other ways.
Peace.

Stop thinking poor is an embarrassment. Life is not about gaining possessions, its about being able to love others.

Ever heard the saying: "I once was ashamed because I had no shoes, until I met a man that had no feet..." ? That's how you gotta look at it-there's always(and I mean always) someone worse off than you...And God doesn't give us anything we can't handle---if you handle it well, there are blessings you couldn't imagine coming to you!
