using the windows XP CD. Begin by inserting the CD, then reboot. Make sure your computer boots to CD before the Hard Drive. This can be adjusted in the BIOS. Then boot to the CD. Follow the prompts until you get to the point it asks you where you want to install Windows XP. Install it over the same partition it is currently. You may need to erase the partition and create it again first. Be warned, this will erase everything on your computer's hard drive (in that partition if there are multiple partitions).

Enter into PC BIOS (by pressing F1 or Del key based on your mother board) select to boot from your CD drive. Then boot your PC through an Windows Xp CD rest would be self explanatory in the installation.

Are you sure you need to format? I, personally, consider this the fix of last resort. Clearing my hard drive and reinstalling everything doesn't appeal to me at all. Why not try a repair first. Here is some information on repair:

Use your XP installer CD........
Insert your CD then, run and install XP, it is menu driven and is not hard to follow, just read every step before you proceed.......

or insert your CD>Re-start your machine>Boot from CD> then proceed....

i insert a windows me bootup disk and reboot then fdisk from there.
