Some pair bond for as long as they are both alive, but the surviving fish will seek a new mate if one dies. Fish are a bit too basic to develop love, so yours didn't die of a broken heart or anything. I honestly would suspect some type of water quality issue.

I can't think of any aquarium fish that mate for life. Most just form pair bonds that last the duration of the mating season.
Cichlids for example are quite bonded pairs but I've never seen them in an enormous tank with other pairs so I can't say for sure if they would switch mates if the opportunity arose.
What I really think happened in your tank was dirty water or disease. Both fish got sick, since they were together so much and then they both died. Sorry to hear about that though.

different fish require different water quality, temperature and or it could have been a disease that only spreads to that type of fish, so maby magicman was right o.O
