I've had my leopard gecko for almost 2 weeks now, and he still keeps trying to escape from his tank. I know he couldn't no matter how hard he tries, but I'm worried that he might hurt himself. I read in the book, Leopard Geckos For Dummies, that if the gecko does this longer than the first few days in its new tank, something's wrong, and that it's likely that it is too visible to another household pet such as a cat or dog. I have cats and dogs, but they're not even allowed in the room where I keep my gecko. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

Geckos need places to hide. They need 3 hide boxes, a dry hide on the warm side, a moist hide on the warm side, and a dry hide on the cool side of the tank. A small bowl of water and a little cap of calcium is also needed. An under the tank heater is a must under one end of the tank, and kept at a temperature of 88-91F. Use a digital thermometer to measure temps. They sleep during the day and come out at night to eat. Please go to www.reptilerooms.com and click on the reptile forums link on the left. Mine does this the most right after I change hi tank. He doesn't like the new sand stuff becasue it feels different and he wants to see about escape routes.
Place to hide and a constant 80*s temperature are key. Maybe try putting a soft papertowel down and see if he rests on it instead.

I have two lepard geckos myself, when ever you change there talk around they like to explore because they are very curious animals. Mine scrape the tank and try to climb the walls, but they never get hurt. Contact me with any other problems or questions, i have quite a few reptiles.

Make sure you have hiding areas for it, food+water, correct temperature, ect.

When you move things around in their cage they do explore and such, i took a hidey place out and put a humid hide in its place and they have been going crazy for the past few days, even my gravid female has stopped digging and is running around
