Lowell is where my father grew up now it has lots of Asians gangs but the downtown area is nice and has much to offer plus it is relatively cheap compared to Boston. the downtown in the heart has a nightlife and condos in old brick mill/factory buildings. About 30 miles from Boston. Not near the beach but close to New Hampshire. they have a nice folk festival every year with food from all kinds of ethnicity's. Beach would be Revere closest to Boston not too bad of a place still very Italian condos right on the water. beach isn't the greatest though. Chelmsford near Lowell is much nicer not that much more expensive as i remember

Lowell has a train into Boston about every hour. You'll have Lowell and the whole of Boston to choose work.

You can have nicer Beach time as you start checking out spots north of Revere. Sailsbury is really popular Beach. When you're not swimming or staking out the beachtowel there are nice spots you can always get to the Ocean too.

You'd want to include sea-towns like Rockport, just beautiful, and you go to all their little shops. Like a big shopping center, only the opposite of a retail indoor shopping-mall.

I work in downtown Lowell. As long as the kids are in school, it isn't that bad. Lowell has made a come-back. It is still a tough place to live.

As for beaches, I would drive North to Maine. Maine is soooooo clean and beaches are beautiful. Check out York Beach. It's only 50 minutes from Lowell and worth the trip. You can have a lobster and see Nubble Lighthouse while you are there.

They have remodeled all the old mills in Lowell and made them into beautiful loft type condos. Lots of artists moving here from Boston. Downtown is great place to live as is the Pawtucketville and Belvidere sections of Lowell. In terms of work it depends on what type you are looking for. Lots of night life downtown with plenty of restaurants and clubs. Closest ocean beaches are Salisbury and Hampton about 35-45 minutes away. Also 35-45 minutes by car to Boston but you can also take train.

Listen to Beatle fanatic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus, Lowell Historic National Park is just plain fascinating.

Plus, Lowell has a large Vietnamese and Cambodian population (outside of the revived downtown) and lots of delicious and authentic oriental restaurants and cafes.

Plus, Lowell has good effects from the branch of the state university there.

Plus, Lowell has fast and convenient train service to Boston.

(And - no, I do not live there.)

PS. And the nearest great sandy beaches are in close by Ipswich, Essex, Rockport and Plum Island. I am quite surprised to prior Answerer mentioned them.

Other than a few good restaurants, and a mid-sized auditorium for concerts and sporting events, Lowell is an old Mill town comprised primarily of ethnic groups fairly new to this country. It offers very little beyond ancient history, and a high crime rate. To me, it is only a town to go to if I have a reason (ie concert, private party at a Greek restaurant, etc). Beyond that I find it offers very little compared to how sooo many Mass towns offer so much!

They have been working on revitalizing it for years, so it is better than it was, but I personally feel it has a long way to go. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable walking to my car alone there at night, and I definately wouldn't go out there beyond a couple restaurants. I'd suggest Mapquest for checking the times to get to Beaches, since I've never driven from there to one, though I'd guess it's about half an hour + for a nice beach.

You asked for opinions, so FWIW that is mine.

Lowell has a lots of different ethnic gangs such as Italian, Brazilian, Irish, and Asian gangs. It is cheaper compare to Boston. Also they is not much to do there. You should find a better city. maybe try Andover if you want to be near Lowell

It is a grate place if you like crack, dope, hookers. gangs etc etc etc. If you have a rottie or a pit (preferably both) and take them with you you will be safe. I wouldn't live there on a bet. That's the way I see it. FYI Lawrence is 10 time worse
