This is two fold. this is a condition of polarization and fear that is common. it also it possible that you sense the separation of your senses when you are sleep yet aware. I have wondered through walls and looked at people and heard converstions as if I really didi this! Later I find out the conversations were accurate and that when going through the walls (IE my sons room) it wa just the same in as in Spirit. there are many unknowns. this I do know: the more I know along the path of Life, themore I do not know. Life is a mystery. embrace it1 try not to feel like you must scream. let it go.

Its not necessarily narcolepsy. I have just recently had this discussion with a bunch of friends at a pizza night. Most of them had had an experience of sleep paralysis, as have I.
Sleep paralysis occurs every night when you go to sleep. The body releases a chemical which stops your body from moving during sleep to avoid injury (like a running or fighting dream).
It is rare, but you can sometimes awaken, or become aware of the paralysis, and without understanding, it can be a scary experience. It is also during this time, that the brain waves drop to a lower cycle, and people can have interesting experiences during this time. Most are usually dream based images & experiences, but the person might think that the images they see are real. Not always so. The dream image just seems more real because we are literally in a different state of mind. Having said that though, it does not mean that some people wont have spiritual or ghostly experiences. After all, we don't have all the answers.

Believe it or not, there is actually a name for it, coined by those in the mental health profession(no, I'm not jacking with you I'm serious) as Phantomania. You know how it is. If people don't understand something they either a-make fun of you like some of the idiots that answered your question, b-create a label for it so it can be demystified. Either way it's a pathetic response to a genuine phenomenen.
I personally believe it is a form of psychic attack....and while I am not discounting the astral travel theory(so eloquently put forth here by people I would actually have an intelligent discourse with) I actually have projected, and the sensations are completely different. I know, because what you are describing used to happen to me while I was growing up, and even now at times, quite often.
Believe me, you'll know the difference too....And there is no "trying" to get back into your body. Think it, and BAM! your'e there. Be careful though, it can be slightly physically unsettling.
Hope this serves you well, and Blessed Be

I had this experience many years ago. I was lying in bed with my eyes open, but not able to move a muscle. My sister was standing at my bedroom door shouting 'whats wrong with you, talk to me' I was shocked that I felt completely paralysed. I also experienced another strange thing [these only happened whilst staying at my parents house] I woke from a dream and felt a horrible strange dark weight on top of me, like I was being raped by a demon. This happened again and the 2nd time I had deep scratches on my back and actually felt like I had sex with someone. My friend said it was an Incubus [ a male demon that lies on top of a woman] You can look it up on Wikipedia. There is also the female demon that lies on top of a man, called the Succubus. I have not had the experience again, but that was very scarey.

It's called sleep paralysis. This is when the mind has woken up but the body remains in a state of sleep paralysis. Symptoms include inability to move, a feeling that one is breathless, hallucination, feelings of the presence of an unidentified entity in the room, etc. "Completely fanciful objects may appear in the room alongside one's normal vision"- Wikipedia. Various beliefs in different cultures, such as various "monsters" in my own Hindu religion have come about due to sleep paralysis. Symptoms disappear in about a minute.
Most people will experience sleep paralysis at some point in life, but you may be suffering from narcolepsy. Go to Wikipedia and search for it, it has a much more in-depth article up along with some potential cures. Ignore Patricia T and DutchGyrl, dude.

Sleep paralysis occurs during REM sleep in order to prevent the body from manifesting movements made in the subject's dreams. Very little is known about the physiology of sleep paralysis. However, some have suggested that it may be linked to post-synaptic inhibition of motor neurons in the pons region of the brain. In particular, low levels of melatonin may stop the depolarization current in the nerves, which prevents the stimulation of the muscles, to prevent the body from enacting the dreamt activity (e.g. preventing a sleeper from flailing his legs when dreaming about running).
Many people who commonly enter sleep paralysis also suffer from narcolepsy. However, various studies suggest that many or most people will experience sleep paralysis at least once or twice in their lives.
Some reports read that various factors increase the likelihood of both paralysis and hallucinations. These include: [3]
Sleeping in a supine position (facing upwards)
Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
Increased stress
Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams, also known as WILD[1] .
Artificial sleeping aids, ADD medications and/or antihistamines
I have had this happen on only 1 occassion, it scared me so bad.

It very possible that doing sleep paralysis you are having an out of body experiences and the ghost that you see is yourself looking down at yourself.. And in that case you can't move your body nor can you scream because not all of you is in that body at that time..... I have witness under a hospital setting some very unique situation take place... And I know that out of body experiences are very real......................And that is the only known situation where you can be at two places at the same time.......................... I left a lot out but I hope that you can see what I am saying.....................................

Actually, sleep paralyzation is quite common and has happened to me a few times. It's a TERRIBLE feeling to be awake but not be able to move or scream. Now, having an apparition hover about me is a different story. That's just plain FREAKY!!

I have had this happen only it was as if I could feel someone or thing holding me down. I was horrified, but never saw anything around me. I was told by a leader in the occult community that it was a warning of some sort. Something trying to tell me something. I never got the message but that was what I was told.

I agree with duTcHGyrL it is astral projection. read one of sylvia brownes books and you'll see. Or you can watch montel williams show when she airs with him and you'll learn even more. basically your traveling at night and when you try to get back in you wake up in the middle of the process. she says that to stop this, you ask god before you go to sleep to keep you inside your body tonight and please dont let me float around or go anywhere. this is supposed to help! hope I have explained it to where you understand.
