After a certain amount of time depending on how large the library is they may first call you then send a letter and if you still don't pay it then they could send it to a collection agency which could be reported on your credit report.

The CIA sends snipers to take you out.

OK, humor aside it depends on the library. Small towns generaly won't fuss with you and they'll just bar you from using the library. Big city libraries will turn those fines over to a collection agency (the Los Angeles Public Library did that to me). If you're lucky the library will have an "amnesty day" where they waive the fine if you just return the book on that day... but not all libraries do that. Good luck!

My library system says they send unpaid fees to a collection agency. I don't think they bother if the fine is less than $10. I'm not sure how strictly they actually follow this.

The little known society of the Library Policemen arrive on your doorstep and take you away to a world you wish you never knew of....

honestly, either the library system makes you pay the money due the next time you get a book from them or they restrict you down to 1 or 2 books until you get the fine paid off. at most, they'll send you a formal yet friendly reminder through the mail that you owe them money. don't worry, they don't put a second mortage on your house or issue you a subpoena

Depending on the library, you may not be able to use other city or school services and may be issued a citation with additional fines.

Whenever it says I have an unpaid fee. I look through my bag and apologize for not having any money. That works for me since I'm a kid but I doubt it would work for an adult.
