I'm pretty sure that at the battle of Cambrai, tank warfare was first used as a main form of attack rather than cavalry, and this type of technology has been improved upon. When tanks were first invented they were able to drive upon harsh terrain but it was possible to discourage tank usage by digging long, wide pits that the tanks could not cross, and now tanks can cross basically anything. I'm not sure if this is World War two im talking about because this just came up in my head, and some of the facts may be sketchy but the basic ideas are right.
