outside the north east and parts of southern California it really dose not pay to take Amtrak.

Unfortunately the United States is unable to create a working high speed rail network like they have in other developed nations.

Am-track is not cheaper than flying... if you don't eat on the train its almost equal.

If you eat on the train its much more expensive.

Also Am-track is slow. The passenger trains have to yield to the freight trains on the US rail system.

For Am-track (passenger rail) to be practical... we would need to lay separate, smoother tracks and run the trains at high speed. High speed rail would be cheaper than taking an airplane from New York to LA. It could cost less than the Greyhound Bus and get you to your destination in less than half the time the bus takes. THAT would be practical. People would buy tickets.

Now.. the train takes longer than the bus and costs as much as taking a plane. No wonder they have trouble selling tickets.

not really amtrak can be just as expensive, If not more. best thing is do some research before buying any ticket. Most airlines have pretty good rate depending on when and where your going. SouthWest is pretty good and so is Jet blue. Just depends on where your from.

my husband and i take amtrak from syracuse ny to cleveland ohio and its usually 200-300$ round trip for the both of us. the train is definatly nicer than planes and most likely cheaper. if you get a sleeper cart they are more expensive like 300$ for a sleeper cart but most people just sleep in the chairs and its normally quiet enough at night, if people want to talk they usually go to the lounge. i would suggust the train. its always cheaper for us when comparing prices to the plane.

I always take the train if time allows. I get an economy sleeper. That includes all meals. I enjoy the trip that way. The scenery is great, I can relax in my own room or go to the club car. I hate flying and try to avoid it when ever I can. It is more expensive, but worth it to me.

It depends on where you are going to and from! Flying is generally much less expensive, faster and you get peanuts.
