What (older) movie has 2 kids in it, one big but slow and one small but smart. They become friends. Giant??

I haven't seen this movie in a long time and can't remember who was in it. I remember watching things on tv about Ryan White about the same time that I saw this movie. Can you help?

I'm thinking he's right about The Mighty.. kid has a terminal illness and makes friend with a bigger kid who takes him out on a "quest".. I remember it being very sad.. (and if memory serves it was the kid who played in Jurassic Park)
