5m^2 - 11m - 3 = 0

m = [11 +/- sqrt (121 + 60)]/10
m = (11 +/- sqrt 181)/10

x^2 + 7x = 12
x^2 + 7x - 12 = 0

x = [-7 +/- sqrt (49 + 48)]/2
x = [-7 +/- sqrt 97]/2

1. 5m^2 -11m - 3 = 0
*Use the Quadratic Formula which, is x...
x = [-b +/- V`b^2 - 4ac] / 2a

First: 3 terms: a = 5; b = -11; c = -3
Sec: substitute the terms with the corresponding variables.

x = [-(-11) +/- V`(-11)^2 - 4(5)(-3)] / 2(5)

x = [11 +/- V`(-11)(-11) - 4(5)(-3)] / 10

x = [11 +/- V`121 - 4(5)(-3)] / 10

x = [11 +/- V`121 - 20(-3)] / 10

x = [11 +/- V`121 + 60] / 10

x = [11 +/- V`181] / 10

2. Factor x^2 +7x = 12

First: set the equation to "0" - subtract 12 from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

x^2 +7x -12 = 12-12
x^2 +7x -12 = 0

Sec: follow the same format from the 1st equation.

5m^2 - 11m - 3 = 0

x^2 + 7x - 12 = 0

Neither of these quadratics can be easily factored - apply the quadratic formula

Given ax^2 + bx - c = 0

x = [ - b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a

5m² -11m - 3=0
use formula,

x = [-b+/-√(b² - 4ac)] / 2a
x = -(-11)+/-√[(-11)² - 4(5)(-3)] / 2(5)
x = [ 11+/-√(181) ] / 10
x = [11+/-√181]/10
x = 2.445 or -0.245

x² + 7x = 12
x² + 7x - 12 =0

use formula

x = [-b+/-√(b² - 4ac)] / 2a
x = -7 +/- √[(7² - 4(1)(-12)] / 2(1)
x = -7 +/- √[97] /2
x = [-7+/-√97] / 2
x = 1.424 or -8.424

use x= [-b +/- square root of (b^2-4ac)]/ 2a

(i did it real quick, but the first one looked like {2.45,.245} if i remember correctly)
