Had the same problem, and fixed it immediately.

Bought toy rubber snakes and placed them on the roof of our house near the gutters.

Worked so well, that other neighbor's did it and no one has tapping noise at 5am!!

The woodpeckers have found a source of food and are doing what comes naturally.

If you can remove the source of food, they will move on. Woodpeckers live mainly on insects.

If you're really serious, identify where they are pecking and spray insect repellent on the area. This will eliminate the source of the insects and hopefully the woodpeckers will find another lunch stop.

its a shame the sounds of nature upset you. maybe traffic and sirens are more your speed...
