I think it's because the captain is always looking for a "LAND HO!"

They are called pleasure crafts... because they are unnecessary. Any boat which does not perform a commercial, or industrial service, is termed for is leisure/entertainment use... a pleasure craft. The same holds true for automobiles... The insurance company will ask the primary use of the vehicle: Business, commuter, or pleasure.

They are called pleasure boats to seperate them from commercial boats. Actually, I call them recreation boats. Because people have fun on them.
